Iranians to celebrate Eid al-Ghadir

Shia Muslims in Iran are to celebrate Eid al-Ghadir on Monday July 18 which marks the day when the Prophet of Islam appointed Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS) as the first Shia Imam.

On the occasion, the holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS) in Iran’s northeastern city of Mashhad will host millions of pilgrims who come to celebrate the festivity.

Known in hadiths as ‘the greatest divine Eid’, Eid al-Ghadir marks the event of Ghadir Khumm, a place where Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) appointed Imam Ali (AS) as his successor.

This year, Tehran’s Vali-e Asr Street, which is the longest in the West Asian region, will host a special 10-km-long ceremony on this occasion.

There will also be several calligraphy, painting, photography exhibitions throughout the country to celebrate the Islamic occasion.
